Job Description

  • A recognised professional qualification in construction health and safety, such as a NEBOSH diploma/MSC etc.
  • Hold qualification in a design or engineering related discipline desired
  • Certified or Incorporated Member of the Association for Project Safety (CMaPS/ IMaPS)
  • At least 5 years previous experience as a CDM advisor
  • Experience in delivering CDM/PD role to private and public sector clients on a mixture of projects, good residential project portfolio experience would be preferable.
  • Experience of working as a consultant and be able to prioritise clients and workload.
  • Good technical writing, client-facing and communication skills
  • Well-organised, diligent, proactive, assertive, well-disciplined, and commercially astute
  • A team player with a ‘can do’ attitude, outgoing, polite, patient, diplomatic, personable, respectful, and flexible
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and able to build good working relationships
The successful candidate will provide a principal designer/CDM advisory service to our diverse client portfolio and ensure compliance with health and safety legislations, while supporting in generating a high standard of service delivery, achieving successful outcomes for our clients, capturing and sharing knowledge across projects, enhancing our culture of innovation and reinforcing our reputation as preferred service provider.
Responsibilities for the successful candidate(s) will include:
  • Lead the development and maintenance of clear and effective processes and procedures for discharging Client and Principal Designer duties on all projects.
  • Support Programme delivery teams in their production of deliverables required under CDM.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of common procedures and practices for consideration of safety hazards in both the operational and construction phases of the asset lifecycle, ensuring that operational staff are engaged by programme delivery teams in this process and that the necessary risk management is undertaken and recorded.
  • Advise and assist teams in identifying hazards and in proposing mitigation measures by encouraging using safe by design principles and solutions
  • Provide assurance regarding the application of standard processes concerning CDM and client governance utilising CDM assurance checklists for submission at key tollgate points throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Undertake regular audits of compliance across all programmes and report back to the Leadership team on the key issues identified.
  • Maintain awareness of potential changes in CDM regulations and their broader implications such as BSA regulations change.
  • Design, deliver and plan CDM training and information of the delivery teams fostering strong relationships and ensuring effective communication to actively engage the department on the learning journey.
  • Support the lead design manager to ensure that safety is considered in the design process and that the client and principal designer responsibilities are being discharged.
  • CDM Documentation, pre-construction information and health and safety plans
  • Act as point of contact for all aspects of health and safety and CDM compliance.
  • Helping the team with business development, repeat business and bidding opportunities.
  • Complying with the responsibilities of the principal designer under the CDM 2015 Regulations
  • Establishing a record of principles and decisions taken in relation to health and safety
  • Receiving strategic briefs and advising the client on the development of the project brief
  • Visiting site and carrying out an initial appraisal to establish existing hazards and site restrictions
  • Advising and assisting clients in the appointment of designers and contractors
  • Reviewing implications of procurement methods in respect of CDM regulations
  • Carrying out design reviews with team members and co-ordinating health and safety matters
  • Ensuring that designers have established safe methods for construction of unusual or complex designs and making this available as part of the pre-construction information
  • Representing the company in a professional and diligent manner; meeting, negotiating, and corresponding with clients to form strong working relationships
